My name is Irena Dono Jorgaqi. I graduated with a degree in Albanian Language and Literature in 1972, and was appointed as a literary editor at the Publishing House "Naim Frashëri" shortly after completing my studies. In 1985, I completed a one-year postgraduate course in literary criticism while on leave from work. I worked as an editor and chief editor for a period of 20 years until the state publishing house ceased its activities.
In the meantime, I have been involved in various writings, especially literary criticism, which I have published in the literary press of the time, as well as more broadly. In 1993, I joined a civil society organization. I volunteered for two years at the "Albanian Women in Need" Association, and when the opportunity for financing from the European Commission arose, I was appointed as the project director of "Publishing Unit". I continued the project with my own resources until 1998 because the funds were only for one year. Meanwhile, I prepared the association's first bulletin and was available to the association for printing materials and everything needed for printing.
I have also been a member of the association's leadership and, for several years, have led the external relations sector. During this time, I have been part of the "Albanian Women in Need" team where several projects have been discussed and launched.
In April 1999, I founded the "Hope for the Future" Association, which, during its 15 years of activity, assisted in the reintegration of returning emigrants. The association's main project titled "Catch the Future" was born in the "Albanian Women in Need" Association but was developed in the new association just created, where several other successful projects were also carried out. During my retirement, I have been involved in various translations and writings. I have translated 12 novels, children's stories, and dozens of poems by famous poets from around the world.
How I met the association:Being a colleague at the "Naim Frashëri" Publishing House with the director of the "Albanian Women in Need" Association, Ms. Sevim Arbana, I responded to her call to get involved, first as a volunteer in the newly established association, where I was also appointed to the leadership. Then, I started working on the project, which I led until I left the "Albanian Women in Need" Association and founded another association.
How I want people to know me?Ms. Dono answers this way: Of course, as a tireless worker in both the main activities of my life, namely in the field of literature and in the sphere of civil society, where I have tried with all my might to contribute and come out honored.
My advice:Work with dedication, honesty, do not spare yourself, do not be intimidated by difficulties, have the courage to speak up and defend the truth, and grow...
